SUMMARY

The Certified Med Tech must handle residents in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort and must adhere to instructions issued by the nurses and to established nursing routines and policies. The Certified Med Tech must perform his/her duties with established methods and procedures and in conformance with recognized standards. He/she should provide maximum resident care services within the limits defined by his/her delegated tasks. The Certified Med Tech may be assigned to the position of Unit Helper at the dispersion of the delegating RN and is responsible for all functions and duties in the NUH/CNA job description as it applies.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Use the wristband or photo card in the chart to identify residents before administering medications or providing care, as necessary.

  2. Record all entries on MAR, flow sheet, and notes in an informative, descriptive and legible manner.

  3. Use only authorized abbreviations established by this facility when recording information.

  4. Report all changes in the resident's condition to the Director of AL/Delegating RN as soon as possible.

  5. Report all accidents and incidents observed on the shift that they occur.

  6. Use supplies and equipment correctly and efficiently, avoiding waste. Inform Director of AL, Delegating RN, or Patient Care Coordinator of equipment and supply needs.

  7. Administer care as directed by the Service plan

     

    Administration of Medications

  1. Prepare and administer oral, topical and suppository medications as prescribed by the physician.

  2. Perform accurate pulse and blood pressure reading and recognize their significance in drug therapy.

  3. Administer all nourishment ordered by a Physician.

  4. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of different types of drugs and their therapeutic effects and nursing implications.

  5. Keep Nurse informed of the desired effects and/or side effects, reactions, refusal and need for medications prescribed.

  6. Notify the Nurse of resident's refusal of medications.

  7. Document accurately the administration or refusal of medications on the MAR and the nurse’s notes at the time of administration.

  8. Document PRN medications under the following directive:

  1. Non-legend (OTC) PRN drugs may be administered without prior permission being authorized.

  2. Legend PRN drugs- must notify the Director of Assisted Living/Delegating RN if medication not effective.

  1. Document on the MAR and the nurse's notes the resident's response to the administration of PRN medication.

  2. Document behaviors as related to the administration of psychotropic drugs.

  3. Follow parameters prior to administering medications.

  4. Administer insulin Subcutaneously as delegated by Director of Assisted Living/Delegating RN

     

    Nursing Care Functions

  1. Assist with resident care at the direction of the Director of AL, Delegating RN or Patient Care Coordinator.

  2. For specific functions see job descriptions for the certified Nursing Assistant/NUH.

     

    Safety and Sanitation

  1. Use proper hand washing technique and infection control measures.

  2. Follow established isolation precautions and procedures.

  3. Follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

  4. Maintain a safe, clutter free environment.

  5. Maintain the medication cart and other equipment used in a clean and orderly manner. Keep it locked when in direct supervision of the cart.

  6. Follow established safety precautions in the performance of all duties.

  7. Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to the Director of AL, Delegating RN, or Patient Care Coordinator immediately.

  8. Participate in fire and disaster drills.

  9. Follow established regulations and resident smoking and report all violations.

  10. Report any communicable or infectious diseases to the Director of AL or Delegating RN.

  11. Operate all equipment in a safe manner.

  12. Report defective equipment to the Director of AL, Delegating RN or Patient Care Coordinator.

     

    Resident Rights

  1. Understand and adhere to all the Resident's Rights as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  2. Treat all residents fairly with kindness, dignity and respect.

  3. Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy.

  4. Knock before entering the resident's room.

  5. Report all grievances and complaints made by the resident to the Director of AL, Delegating RN or Patient Care Coordinator.

  6. Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property.

  7. Honor the resident's refusal of treatment request and report such requests to the Director of AL, Delegating RN or Patient Care Coordinator.

     

    Personal and Professional Growth

     

  1. Adherence to all rules, regulations and policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  2. Interact positively with coworkers, residents, family and visitors.

  3. Attend all required annual in-service training.

  4. Read memos, notices and communication books and keeps abreast of changes occurring within the facility.

     

     

    Computer

    Enter, adjust and retrieve data using a microcomputer or personal computer and keyboard device. Word processing, e-mail, database entry skills will also be needed.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one year long term care experience and/or training preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of a State Approved Medication Technician course.

     

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

     

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

     

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

     

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Listed in good standing on the Maryland CNA Registry if applicable
