SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of a Medication Technician is to assist in the administering of medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the attending physician, the Delegating RN or the Director of Assisted Living. The administration of medications shall be in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures and practices of Fahrney-Keedy, and the requirements of the State. Provide care for Assisted Living/Memory Care residents according to their needs.

 

DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:

As a Medication Technician, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibilities and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

 

EMPLOYMENT AT WILL:

Employment with Fahrney-Keedy is “at will”. Either the associate or Fahrney-Keedy may terminate the employment relationship for any reason at any time without notice, regardless of the length of employment or the granting of benefits of any kind, including but not limited to benefits which provide for vesting based on length of service.

 

CONFIDENTILITY:

Fahrney-Keedy associates recognize that Fahrney-Keedy has and will have information regarding financial, personal and medical affairs and other vital information (collectively, “information”) which are valuable, special and unique assets of Fahrney-Keedy. Associates agree that they will not at any time or in any manner solicit, collect or divulge any Information to any third party without the prior written consent of Fahrney-Keedy. This information is Company property which may not be disclosed outside the facility unless properly released for publication. Associates will protect the Information and treat it as strictly confidential. Associates should not discuss Fahrney-Keedy affairs with others

NOTES:

Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document the oral, topical, or suppository medications that are commonly used at Fahrney-Keedy and that may be ordered for resident use by the attending physician or the Medical Director.

 

 

Complete medication charting following established nursing standards, the policies, procedures and practices of Fahrney-Keedy and the requirements of the State.

 

 

Follow Fahrney-Keedy’s policies and procedures regarding the destroying of medications; assist in carrying out these rules under the direction of the Delegating RN or Director of Nursing, including documentation requirements.

 

 

Assist in documenting and removing medications that are discontinued by the attending physician.

 

 

Follow Fahrney-Keedy’s policies and procedures governing drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and the Delegating RN/Director of Nursing.

 

 

Ensure that documentation of the drug receipt error includes a written error report, signed by an observer/witness and you as the Med. Tech.

 

 

Follow facility policies and procedures in holding medications for residents who are transferred from Fahrney-Keedy or when the attending physician discontinues medications.

 

 

Accurately measure, record, and report the vital signs of residents.

 

 

Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed. Document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered, including reason (s) for refusal.

 

 

Promptly notify the Delegating RN or Director of Nursing of any errors or reactions to medications by residents.

 

 

Follow the medication card practices of Fahrney-Keedy.

 

 

Ensure that no medication is administered without a written, signed, dated order from an attending licensed physician.

 

 

Follow Fahrney-Keedy’s policies and procedures for recording the order in the resident’s clinical record, including the type, route, dosage, frequency and strength of each medication.

 

 

Verify the identity of the resident before administering the medication treatment.

 

 

Follow established guidelines concerning the storage of drugs and biologicals.

 

 

Be familiar with the meaning and usage of common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms relative to the administration of medications as used by Fahrney-Keedy, pharmacists and physicians.

 

 

Provides care in a safe and timely manner in accordance with Fahrney-Keedy’s policies and procedures, according to each resident’s level of care and needs, and within the Med. Tech.’s scope of practice.

 

 

Assists or completes resident’s dental care, dressing/undressing, nail care, hair care and shaving needs. Ensures residents have eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, etc.

 

 

Obtains vital signs and weights as required.

 

 

Change bed linens per Fahrney-Keedy’s schedule in occupied and unoccupied rooms.

 

 

Tidies up resident rooms:

  • Puts resident clothing away.
  • Arranges personal items so they are within reach of the resident.
  • Ensures the resident’s call bell is within easy reach.

 

 

Transports residents to activities, dining room, beauty shop, etc.

 

 

Reminds residents of the need to consume liquids and assists as needed. Provides nourishments and snacks to residents. Records intake percentages on intake and output.

Notes

Follow the policies and procedures of Fahrney-Keedy governing the administering of medications to residents.

 

 

Note and report errors in the administration of medications.

 

 

Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charts, reports, etc. and submit these as may be required.

 

 

Maintain a friendly, productive, working relationship with other members of the department, and facility.

 

 

Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Assisted Living, the Delegating RN, or the Director of Nursing.

 

 

Reports all changes in the resident’s condition to the Delegating RN or Charge Nurse as soon as practical.

 

 

Participate and cooperate with any facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Director of ALU or Delegating RN.

 

 

Agree not to disclose assigned user ID codes and passwords for accessing resident/facility information and promptly report suspected or known violations of such disclosure to the Director of ALU or Delegating RN.

 

 

Agree not to disclose resident’s protected health information and promptly report suspected or known violations of such disclosure to the Director of ALU or Delegating RN.

 

 

Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempt to access the facility’s information system.

 

 

Ensure that departmental computer workstations left unattended are properly logged off or the password protected automatic screensaver activates within established policy guidelines.

 

 

Attend annual in-service training programs as scheduled.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an associate may encounter while performing the essential duties of this position. RESIDENT RIGHTS:

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
  • Ensure that you treat all residents fairly with kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy.
  • Knock and wait for permission to enter all residents’ rooms.
  • Report all grievances and complaints made by the residents to the Director of Assisted Living or the Delegating RN.
  • Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property to the Fahrney-Keedy Abuse Coordinator.
  • Honor the resident’s refusal of treatment request. Report such requests to your Supervisor.

 

 

 

 

 

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the residents served.

  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.

 

 

PRIOR/RELATED EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be a certified Medication Technician in accordance with the laws of this State.

 

 

PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices):

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, staff, and support agencies.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must not have a weight-lifting restriction. Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry a minimum distance of 50 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
